ICAR-KVK-Alappuzha organized an awareness seminar on ‘Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Rights Act’ at Kattanam on 21.07.17 for the benefit of the farmers of Onattukara region. The programme was inaugurated by Dr.Jiju.P.Alex, Director of Extension, Kerala Agrl. University in which about 200 farmers of the region attended. Smt.Rajini Jaydev, President, Bharanikkavu Block Panchayath, Dr.V.Krishnakumar, Head, ICAR-CPCRI, Regional Station, Kayamkulam and Dr.P.Muralidharan, Principal Scientist & Head, ICAR-KVK-Alappuzha spoke to the audience on the occasion. Sri.K.Narendran, recipient of the Plant Genome Saviour Award (2013) of the PPV&FR Authority was honored by the chief guest in the programme.
Dr.Regi Jacob Thomas, Principal Scientist, ICAR-CPCRI, Kayamkulam and Dr.Lijo Thomas, Scientist, ICAR-IISR, Calicut presented the topics in the seminar and lead the discussions followed. An exhibition on different species of medicinal plants was also arranged in the venue. Extension booklet and leaflets highlighting the importance of PPV&FR Act and guidelines for registration of farmer varieties were distributed to the participants. The programme was funded by the Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Rights Authority, New Delhi.
